Etz Chayim is a warm, welcoming congregation that offers an egalitarian and inclusive community for members of all ages, occupations, household configurations, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political affiliations. Some of us grew up in Orthodox, Reform, or Conservative congregations. Others are Jews by choice or Jews by association. About a third of our households are interfaith. Many of us had not affiliated with another congregation since childhood; for a few members, Etz Chayim is their first shul ever.
Etz Chayim has chosen not to affiliate with any Jewish movement or denomination because we enjoy the challenge of building our own traditions. We are a musical congregation without a cantor, choir, or organ. We sing in English and in Hebrew, and we sing throughout our services. Our prayer book includes Hebrew, English translation, and transliteration to make it easier to participate.
Founded in 1995, the congregation now has about 290 households. We welcome you to our home at 4161 Alma Street, Palo Alto, just north of San Antonio. Our Rabbi and
scholar-in-residence is Ari Cartun; our Education Director is Melissa Rogoway; our Executive Director is Irv Duchowny.
